Shown is a slide, taken in 1975, of artifacts collected at the Comanche Archeological Site in Stafford County. The site was the location of a camp in a blowout (a depression created by wind erosion) within stabilized sand dunes. Archeologists consider the site to be multicomponent (multiple occupations) that was occupied periodically through the Early to Late Ceramic Periods (1 CE - 1800). Artifacts shown on the slide include bone, pottery sherds, chert knives and arrow points.

Ballot box fragment
Date: 1882
Shallow rectangular pine ballot box with irregular sides and no lid. Portion of a ballot box used at the Stafford County seat election on Apr 5th, 1882. Before the polls closed, a tornado struck the building in which the election was held. The box was carried a half mile by the storm, and the ballots it contained were never found. Stafford was defeated by St. John in a follow-up election for the Stafford County seat. A white paper label adhered to the box's underside relates the story.

Council of National Defense Woman's Committee correspondence

This collection consists of correspondence between individuals and committee members to the state chair of the Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense. The Council of National Defense was established at the federal level in 1916 as an emergency agency under the Army Appropriation Act and abolished in 1921. It was created in reaction to World War I to coordinate resources and industries for national defense and improve civilian morale. The Woman's Committee of the Kansas Council of National Defense performed the same functions at the state and local levels, coordinating women's activities for national defense. The materials are organized alphabetically by county. The digitization of this collection was paid for through the Margot R. Swovelan Endowment Fund.

In this letter, Dollie Boland of Stafford, Kansas, asks Kansas Governor Arthur Capper to find out why the U.S. Army will not let family members visit their loved ones at the hospital on Camp Funston. Boland wrote her letter to Governor Capper while her brother was being cared for at the Camp Funston hospital during the influenza outbreak of 1918.

Fern C. Sanders, World War I soldier

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records. This file contains information on Fern C. Sanders, who died on October 13, 1918 at the base hospital in Ft. Riley, Kansas. A line in his obituary reads, "Under regulations governing the influenza epidemic, the funeral was private, only a few being present."

This biennial report from the Kansas State Board of Agriculture includes information on the selection, cultivation, and harvesting of Indian corn, ideas for improving the conditions of farm life, and information on commercial fertilizers. There are various kinds of statistics for each county that include population, acreages, livestock, and assessed valuation of property. There are also a number of tables listing statistics for all counties. The proceedings and activities of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture are included beginning on page 977. Please see the table of contents on image 8 to determine appropriate page numbers. Page numbering starts over after page 1264. This section contains compiled statistics from the 1905 Kansas decennial census but individuals are not listed. A general index starts on page 61 of the Decennial Census section at the back of the volume.

This biennial report covers the years 1885-86. The volume contains two parts and the page numbering starts over at the beginning of part II. The volume contains numerous agricultural statistics and information about other industries. It also contains information about Kansas weather, 248彩票网s, churches, various agricultural issues such as Texas fever, chinch bugs, vacant public lands, etc. A major part of the volume is devoted to information gathered during the 1885 statewide census conducted by the Board of Agriculture. Part I contains a number of tables with statistics about Kansas residents broken down by county. Part I also contains a section on each county, providing summary information about the history of the county, nativity of residents, a description of the landscape, crops, livestock, 248彩票网s, newspapers, banks, and a list of county officers for 1887. Proceedings and other activities of the Kansas State Board of Agriculture are in Part II.

Governor Arthur Capper to Dollie Boland

In this letter, Kansas Governor Arthur Capper responds to an earlier letter from Mrs. Dollie Boland of Stafford, Kansas. Boland had written him to find out about her brother who was in the hospital at Camp Funston. Capper explains that due to the influenza outbreak, the U.S. Army authorities "threw a quarantine around the camp and declined to let anybody in." Dollie's letter to the Governor can be found in Kansas Memory as Unit ID 217170.

History of Kansas newspapers

The subtitle of this publication is "A History of the Newspapers and Magazines Published in Kansas From the Organization of Kansas Territory, 1854, to January 1, 1916." This history includes biographical sketches and some portraits of prominent editors. The bulk of the book contains listings of all of the newspapers published in the state, organized by county and then towns within that county. This listing begins on page 137. Newspapers that were being published in 1916 include the name of the editor/publisher, the frequency, how long it had been published, and notes about any predecessor papers. The information for each county also includes a list of all discontinued newspapers from that county. Each county listing begins with the date it was organized, the origin of the name, and some basic statistics. This volume is an excellent source on the early newspaper history of Kansas. A detailed index begins on page 323. The Kansas State Historical Society was founded by Kansas newspaper editors and its newspaper holdings represent an almost comprehensive collection of the newspapers published in all parts of Kansas, most of which are available on microfilm through interlibrary loan.

John Michael (Mike) Hayden and Gale Norton

A photograph of Mike Hayden, Secretary of Wildlife and Parks and former Kansas Governor, with Gale A. Norton, the 48th United States Secretary of the Interior, at the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge in Stafford County, Kansas. Norton served from 2001 to 2006 under President George Walker Bush. Norton was born in Wichita, Kansas, and later moved to Colorado where she was Attorney General. Hayden was born in Atwood, Kansas, and received his bachelor's degree in wildlife conservation from Kansas State University and a master's degree in biology from Fort Hays State University. During the Vietnam War, he was an infantry company commander in the U.S. Army. Hayden spent 13 months in Vietnam, where he received the Soldier's Medal, two bronze Stars, and the Army Commendation Medal. He began his career in public service as a state representative, serving from 1972 to 1986. In 1983 and 1985, he was elected speaker of the Kansas House of Representatives. Hayden was elected Kansas Governor in 1986. After leaving office in 1991, President George H. W. Bush named Hayden to be the Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Fish and Wildlife. From 1993 to 2001, Hayden served as President and CEO of the American Sportfishing Association. In 2002, he returned to Kansas to accept a position as Secretary of Wildlife and Parks.

Kansas Board of Pharmacy reports

These reports, published by the Kansas Board of Pharmacy, may include the secretary's annual report to the governor, board proceedings, cases prosecuted, laws, rules and regulations, legal decisions, and lists of registered pharmacists, pharmacies, and assistants. Names are frequently listed alphabetically and by county. Some reports contain short sketches of deceased members. A fifth annual report is not known to exist. The fourth and sixth reports were both published in 1891. Gaps in publication or holdings exist in 1900; 1917-1934; 1936; 1939; 1941-1947; 1949-1954; 1956-1957; 1959-1966; 1968-1971; and post 1972. Funds to underwrite the digitization of these reports, Board of Pharmacy Examination questions (Item # 214023), and the Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations (Item #214924) were provided by the Jere Matchett Memorial Fund. This donation also funded the scanning of photographs of drug stores across Kansas to include them in Kansas Memory.
