Affidavit from 248彩票网r Hunter of Coffeyville, Kansas, to U.S. Attorney General Francis Biddle. The affidavit describes the treatment endured by Melvin L. Jackson, F. Jerry Molohan, and 248彩票网r W. Hunter during World War II. The three men, all Jehovah's Witnesses and conscientious objectors, describe the harsh treatment and threats of violence they faced from some members of the American Legion due to their religious beliefs.

Alfred Fairfax

A portrait of Alfred Fairfax, a politician, farmer and pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church in Parsons, Kansas, who resided near Peru, Kansas. He achieved political distinction in 1888 when he was elected to represent the 58th District, Chautauqua County, in the Kansas House of Representatives. Although few details regarding his single term are known, Representative Fairfax served as chairman of the House Committee on Immigration, and received praise for his service from both the white and black Kansas newspapers.

A Lithic Collection from 14CT312

These three chipped stone tools were collected from an Early Ceramic period archeological site in Chautauqua County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1976. Shown from left to right is an alternately beveled knife, a scraper, and a large corner-notched dart point fragment. Repeated sharpening on the knife's alternate sides created the bevels. Scrapers, such as this one would have been hafted onto a handle and used to scrape hides. The scraper would have required periodic resharpening. The dart point and the alternately beveled knife get their pinkish color as a result of the material being carefully heated before manufacturing to improve the chert's knapping qualities. Dart points would be mounted to the dart foreshaft, which would in turn be connected to the dart shaft. The assembled dart would then be thrown with an atlatl (spearthrower).

An appeal for help in behalf of the colored refugees in Kansas

This flyer, distributed by the Southern Refugee Relief Association of Chicago, Illinois, describes the dire situation of the African-American refugees relocated in Kansas. The secretary of this association, Horatio N. Rust, had taken this opportunity to pass along information relayed to him by Elizabeth Comstock, an aid worker in Topeka. Comstock was thankful for the donations of food and other goods, but asked for more assistance in feeding, clothing, and sheltering these refugees. The flyer also includes short excerpts of letters by agents of the refugee association who had direct knowledge of the emigrants' situation.

Carl Lester Cavenee, World War I soldier

Around 1919, the Kansas State Historical Society and the American Legion solicited biographical information from returning veterans (primarily members of the 35th and 89th infantry divisions) and the families of those who died in service, notably from the Gold Star Mothers. Each veteran or family member was asked to provide letters, photographs, a biography, and military records. This file contains information on Carl Lester Cavenee, 353rd Infantry. Cavenee died a prisoner of war in 1918.

The larger corner notched dart has been heat treated to improve the knapping quality of the chert. Both points are broken at the tip and both are corner-notched. Dart points would be mounted to the dart foreshaft, which would in turn be connected to the dart shaft. The assembled dart would then be thrown with an atlatl (spearthrower).

Dentate Stamped Pottery from 14CT313

This rim sherd was collected from an archeological site in Chautauqua County and donated to the Kansas Historical Society in 1976. The rim sherd has grit temper, and though difficult to see, a series of diagonal rows of dentate stamping above a horizontal tool trailed line and a possible boss. Dentate stamping is a decorating technique that leaves tooth-like impressions. Dentate stamping is associated not only with Cuesta phase pottery, but also Kansas City Hopewell and Schultz phase pottery.

Electors of Chautauqua County to Governor Lyman Humphrey

The Grafton and Center [Farmers'] Alliances of Chautauqua County petition Governor Lyman Humphrey to call a special session of the state legislature to provide farmers relief from mortgages. The Farmers' Alliance and Labor's Union of America of Kansas produced the petition form and accompanying resolution circular. The circular claims that legislation is needed immediately since the financial failure of many farmers is imminent. The circular also claims other states have prospered with such legislation and the laws will not discourage financial institutions from operating in the state. According to the circular, farmers bear an unfair tax burden and their requests for financial relief are reasonable. G. W. Roberts, Chairman Committee, Bed Rock Alliance, Elk Falls, Kansas, produced the circular. See Governor Lyman Humphrey to John Hughes, December 11, 1889.

Fayetteville road

These letters, maps, and reminiscences relate to the Fayetteville road, also known as the Fayetteville Emigrant Trail. This trail started at Arkansas Post in Arkansas, then headed towards the northeast corner of Oklahoma, crossing the Neosho River, entering the state of Kansas in what is now Montgomery County. The trail crossed the Verdigris River about two miles north of the Kansas state line, went through the present-day site of Coffeyville making its way northwest, finally meeting with the Santa Fe Trail at Turkey Creek in McPherson County, Kansas. In total, this trail crossed the following Kansas counties: Montgomery, Chautauqua, Elk, Butler, Harvey, Marion and McPherson.
