Albin Kasper Longren's photograph album
Date: 1912-1921
This photograph album documents a number of airplanes (biplanes)designed, built and flown by Albin Kasper Longren. He built and flew Topeka's first aircraft on September 2, 1911. At two different times, Longren tried to establish an airplane factory in Topeka, Kansas. His second factory was in an abandoned woolen mill in Oakland, a neighborhood in Topeka, Kansas. The album contains photographs of the exterior and interior of this factory and numerous views of planes and plane parts. Longren's planes were well received, but his business failed because he had difficulty manufacturing numbers of planes. There are two images of a plane parked at the entrance to Gage Park in Topeka. Longren did exhibition flying at county fairs and other events in the region under the name Longren Aviators Exhibition Flyers. The album also has images of biplanes at Coffeyville, Anthony, Stockton, and other locations in Kansas as well as at least one image taken in the following states: Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas. Longren built a plane the was purchased by Phillip Billard, a Topeka aviator, and there are images of this plane in the album.

The one-story "county-seat" style depot built in 1912 features a gabled roof with an operators' bay, a waiting room and a freight room. At the peak of the roof are the Santa Fe emblems commonly associated with a county-seat depot. In the first image a group of men are gathered in front of the unfinished structure. The second photograph shows the depot completed at a later date.

Staff Sergeant Austin E. "Bud" Albright was drafted into the Army (Infantry) in 1942 and served until 1945 in the Co B 35th Reg 25th Div. Interviewed by James Johnston on Oct 1, 1999, Albright talked about military experiences in the Second World War. The 2005 Kansas Legislature passed a bill funding the WWII Veterans Oral History grant program. This transcript is from one of the nine community institutions that received these grants. The transcript from the interview is presented here; the original video copy of the interview is available through the Greater Barber County Historical Action Assn and through the Kansas State Historical Society.

Automobile Club of Wichita Year Book

The Automobile Club of Wichita published this year book for the years 1909-1910. Its content reflects that automobile travel was a recent introduction to the lives of Kansans. It includes advertisements from automobile dealers, garages, and other businesses in Wichita, Hutchinson, Newton, Winfield, El Dorado, Dodge City, Yates Center, Iola, Independence, Topeka, Emporia, Garden City, and Lawrence. It also lists the officers and board of directors of the club, its constitution and bylaws, the Kansas law regulation the use of automobiles, two Wichita ordinances (#2875 and 3002) related to the use of cars, and rules of the road. The bulk of the yearbook provides driving routes to and from various cities and towns in Kansas, as well as Colorado and Oklahoma. An index to the routes and maps is on pages 22-23. These driving routes include specific directions and include references to many small towns and local landmarks, etc. The yearbook also lists Wichita residents that own automobiles, their license numbers and the type of automobile they own. The booklet concludes with a list of members of the automobile club.

Bone Shaft Wrench from the Armstrong Site, 14HP5
Date: 1142-1292 CE
This bone shaft wrench was recovered from the Armstrong site, a Bluff Creek complex Middle Ceramic village in Harper County. It was made from a deer tibia and in addition to the eye it has a series of incised lines on the side and is highly polished. Shaft wrenches were used to straighten wooden spear or arrow shafts.
